The siege isn’t big news: We were already a banana republic
I’m happy that the siege happened so that we can finally disown Trumpism and the majority of people in power can call this an insurrection, but I’m very disappointed that we WOULDN’T HAVE CALLED this a government insurrection before January 6th
Over the last several months, we had 1) a president and a vice president and a secretary of state repeatedly state they wouldn’t agree to the rules of a democracy 2) various government officials who have been pressured on record and otherwise fired by Trump for simply reporting that the election was fair 3) a storming of the Michigan statehouse and a plot to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer 4) members of Dominion voting systems have their lives threatened including one who had a noose left on his lawn. These people weren’t safe in their own homes 5) the secretary of state of Georgia practically have to enter the witness protection program to keep his own family safe 6) the Secretary of State of Georgia be explicitly threatened by the president to throw the election and most importantly 7) Trump used his pardon power for the direct purpose of getting his allies to stay on his side. Our 45th president bragged during his campaign that he could murder someone on 5th Avenue and get away with it. That might not have been technically true, but with his misunderstanding of pardon power, Trump showed that he could technically have someone murder someone on his s-tlist like Brad Raffenspberger or Mitt Romney and then pardon the murderer the next day.
