The Best Opinion for me about the Israel-Palestine War is to Have None
Do I advertise a lot that I’m half-Israeli? Because, no joke, three people have asked me my views on the conflict, unsolicited. If my family were from Sri Lanka or Ecuador, I wouldn’t have this kind of pressure to solve World Affairs all the time, geez.
I’m really not an expert, so my process has always been:
Step one: To acknowledge that this situation has always been too complicated for me. Most people studying international relations in college will jump into the Middle East as if it’s the highest degree of difficulty in a video game. There are people I respect who have opposing views on this topic and then, in the same dogmatic way that the Left and Right in the US tragically inhabit these days, people often emotionally and angrily tell me that the other people with opposing views aren’t people I should respect.
Step two: To acknowledge that I can’t fix it. As far as I can gather. This war has been going on as long as I’ve been alive whether they call it a war or not. It doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to end with or without my help? Granted, this is an unusually horrible day in that conflict and hopefully the people I respect who are for Palestinian Rights are acknowledging this.
Step three: To realize my biases in this situation make me not the most impartial advocate, which is even more reason to not have an opinion. The number of Israeli family members I have, the Jewish education I had growing up, and…
