The Art of Posting Whatever I Want on Facebook
The long struggle and constraints to say what you want to say
If there’s one small thing I can do to change the world better, it’s to say whatever the hell I feel like saying on Facebook and Twitter. Sometimes, I want to share to the world my frustration with things like passwords or internet phone books. I also have political positions against wokeness and the evils of MAGA among other things that I feel like I can influence people with. More than that, however, it’s about confronting the challenge of openly being yourself.
I grew up with a few bad years of being a social outcast. In 8th grade and especially 9th grade when I entered high school, I suddenly experienced a boost in popularity. As someone who had experienced both sides of popularity, I clinged to this newfound love from my peers and realized the value of being at the cool kids’ table. At one point, when my parents stripped away my driving privileges after an errant trip, I cried (cars were a status symbol of coolness) and then came to the realization that maybe maintaining the facade of popularity wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. I still had many years of high school and college to go where being liked among your peers was beneficial, so I didn’t let go of it completely.
In my post-college years, I had a lot to say, but I always felt silently judged by my peers when I posted things on my Facebook status. As more of them got married (perhaps the new adult mark of coolness)…
