Classic Film Appreciation-The Golden Age of Hollywood

Overview: Today’s audiences often shy away from black-and-white films because they’re too old and different. In truth, these films have more in common with today’s films and often comprise a type of entertainment that wouldn’t get greenlit for wide release films today. At the same time, films of Hollywood’s Golden Age had limitations as well that are equally interesting to learn about.

With suggested viewings and clips of films that will be shown during the class, students will be exposed to the highlights of cinema (particularly the Golden Age of Hollywood), learn about their context, and discuss them.

Objectives: The aims of this course are:

1) To show that black and white movies aren’t as distant from our current entertainment era as we are led to believe.

2) To have a basic overview of the different chronological eras in film history and to learn to distinguish them stylistically when viewing films

3) To understand how different economic and socio-political forces shape what was produced by the American film industry then as it did now
