1. Washington Family Magazine: Returning to School as a Single Parent
I have published two articles for Washington Family Magazine where I wrote in 2021 and 2022. The revolving door in journalism is fast and if was still on the rolodexes of even half of the outlets I’d worked for, I’d be extremely successful. As is often the case, you need to reestablish relations with the magazine with its new editor. The good news is you get a leg up with the line “I wrote for you before” making the editor feel like it’s an easier decision to put you back in the rotation.
I recently have done two articles for Washington Family Magazine. The first one, how to go to college as a parent, was daunting because it was broad. Tons of women all over the DMV go to college as a parent. How could I possibly tell a coherent and focused specific story with so many eligible people? I probably spent way too much time on this story physically going to college campuses and discovering that they might not have had anything specifically focused for this demographic.
Finally, a direction came to me through a colleague of a colleague at work who was a student at University of Maryland and mentioned there was a certain office there for continuing education. Knowing that what office called itself allowed me to know what to google and I get a much better source at Towson University who gave good quotes about what I was…
