Earlier this week, various LGBT support groups wrote a letter to the New York Times making certain demands of the newspaper’s managing editor for standards to stop “platforming” pieces that are harmful to the trans community.

I was one of only two people out of 32 in a certain group that voted against a resolution of support within a news organization I’m in.

One person wrote me suggesting that I reconsider my vote because trans workers are being singled out by bosses and there is an evident state of harm. They also suggested that this vote is very clear if we care about solidarity to all workers in the news industry.

My Response:

The motto of standing with the worker refers to if they are being discriminated against by their bosses and if they are allowed to do their work. Working for a newspaper that doesn’t 100% share your views does not strike me as something that interferes with your job. It happens all the time with Democrats (myself included) who have contributed to Conservative publications. I would be more convinced if I have heard reports of transgender colleagues or writers being treated differently, but the letter is signed by transgender writers who have been allowed to contribute their words to the Times. Surely I’ve only heard of Bari Weiss and other people in her vein getting bullied. I am extremely ready to imagine that transgender writers are also bullied, but let’s not assume…
