No he was his own person and is not obligated to be an ally to a cause he doesn't believe him. I applaud him for resisting public pressure (although technically the movement of Defund the Police is only a very loud 15%) from the extreme fringes of the left (from which good governance will never thrive). This "let's only celebrate black/LGBT/female activist people who agree with our point of view and discard the rest" is extremely problematic and I say this as a fellow liberal..
And to suggest he's not an activist is simply ridiculous considering he's probably the only president or vice president to use his law degree to be a community activist. For all I know he might have been the only presidential candidate in 2008 or even this century with a community activist background
