If I created the Circle’s next cast from scratch…

I recently tried a creative exercise of designing the Circle characters from scratch with an eye towards interesting storylines and the kinds of diversity (including geographical, though the show veers towards California) the show demands. Hmmm, maybe I should write fiction?

  1. A 23-year old Caucasian male from Chicago in a wheelchair with a severe enough disease (though mentally he’s fine) that he needs a live-in nurse. He pairs up with his nurse who’s a 60-year old Trinidad and Tobago emigre (basing this off my grandmother’s nurse). The two really have a strong bond and she’s not entirely maternal of him but she’s his big cheerleader. He’ll not want to hide his disability but because he can’t play as two people, he’ll go in as a disabled woman.
  2. A gay male computer programmer, 29, who has mostly straight friends because he works in Seattle’s tech corridor and is nerdy. He has a boyfriend but that is the only gay person in his circle. He feels that because he has straight friends and is gay, he can codes-witch for the social situation and he also will brag about his analytical mind. He’ll be the guy mapping out the permutations like A Beautiful Mind.

3. A pair of African-American sisters in Denver who are 30 and 17. They’re the youngest and oldest of 6 and never spent that much time together because of the age difference. However, as younger sis got in her teens, the older sister, a beautician started getting interested in the business and, because she’s a millenial, she started…
