I generally think an online friend isn't a real friend with very few exceptions like you're talking multiple times a week and it's cleear you always have stuff to talk about.

My rule is they're willing to meet you then they're your friend.

Maybe the best thing to do is sort out if you're friends or acquaintances as you go.
