Ghosting as a last resort is more permissible but it certainly can hurt and I'd classify it as not mature or of good manners and can certainly hurt the other person quite a bit when the alternative can be so much more polite. Obviously, there are lines and it's different in every situation. I was ghosted by someone I was talking to en route to dating and she was undergoing alcoholism treatment and it made more sense though I was hurt at the time
