Election Report from a Swing State
It seems unlikely to most of us who obviously see one side as obviously the one you should vote for (no matter which side you choose) but there are varying levels of which people care about this election at all, while the rest of us see this as an apocalyptic scenario. I met a few of them today. Some frustrated me. Aproaching them seemed somewhat daunting. The list of reasons Trump was not qualified for president 8 years ago was pretty long, the list of things he has shown himself to be a disaster since then has been longer, the distance between him and reality has grown larger, and his distance beyond age where I trust you to handle an important job is greater. Simply put, Trump is a more and more absurd proposition, but to distill all this into talking points as someone might be rolling up a window or only have the same patience to here my pitch in 2020, is a harder challenge.
Why couldn’t the courts have done their job and simply allowed this tumorous stain on our national scene for the past 8 years to stay off the ballot? or why couldnt our primary voters or party infrastructure sensibly just decided not to run a convicted felon currently undergoing trials?
The vast majority of effort I put into convincing people that there’s a substantial difference between the 1984-level bending of reality on the right and the left is my swing voter sister and another relative who has asked not to be named and the Voldermort of my family was always a Republican anyway. It’s extremely refreshing to have these conversations with people…
