Colonialism: A Bad Word?
One thing that the generation below me is horrible about is the idea that “colonialism” is a bad word
Why? Slavery is bad, yes, but colonialism is simply a state or nation extending its empire by conquering the territory next door. Yes, we’ve been less civillized about it in the past, but that’s more like a historical fact, not something to emotionally weaponize or to make an issue out of like removing a school mascot. Every political entity had to colonize or else their total area would be a tiny hamlet. .
Attempting to wipe out history, or demonize figures involved with those chapters because slavery was involved, is simply not a responsible way to interpret or be a caretaker of the past.
Tourism of any sort that involves plantations has become demonized. Mascots involving colonialism or generic words in the English language like “rebel” have been reconsidered because it might carry a racist connotation. Neither of these moves sends the right message because it doesn’t teach people to take history into context.
