A Letter to a Trump Supporter
I’m not sure of the utility of this, but it couldn’t hurt to try. If you have a Trump supporter in your life, it is important to take a stand against them. Feel free to use this as inspiration.
Dear Y,
I’m a friend of X who met you a while back at a trivia night where we had a bit of a spat.
On that night, I was highly dismissive of your support of view calling you brainwashed. I regret that and in hindsight I wouldn’t have suggested that there’s any lack of intelligence or sincerity that you arrived at those points.
I know there’s a lot of polarization in this country and I try to brush off liberal dismissiveness of the right to the degree I can. I have a conservative brother-in-law who feels suppressed in academia and I too have been persecuted in online spaces for not being woke enough.
At the same time, I feel like I’d be ignoring some civic duty to not use my voice to challenge your views when I think that support for Trump in 2024 is equivalent to support for undermining our democracy. Being smart is not an argument in and of itself for supporting a movement that wants to delegitimize the democratic transition of power or the spinning of basic truths and weaponizing of lies.
